Jellyfish and marine life safety for swimmers
Stings, sea urchins, and the simple precautions that keep a beach day safe.

Most marine-life encounters are minor, but some can ruin a holiday. A few precautions and a quick response plan make a big difference.
Common risks and what to do
- Jellyfish stings: rinse with seawater, remove tentacles with gloves or tweezers, apply vinegar or hot water for some species. Avoid fresh water and rubbing.
- Sea urchins: remove visible spines, soak in hot water, seek medical help if a spine breaks deep or near a joint.
- Stingrays: shuffle your feet in sandy areas to avoid stepping on them.
- Weever fish: common in the Mediterranean; hot water immersion helps with stings.
