How to start safely, what to wear, and the health benefits of swimming cold.

Cold-water swimming has moved from niche to mainstream. Done right, it can boost mood, circulation and resilience. Done wrong, it can be dangerous. The key is gradual exposure and never swimming alone in cold water.
Start in summer, extend into autumn
- Begin at 18–20°C and stay in for a few minutes.
- Drop the water temperature by 2–3°C every couple of weeks as you acclimatise.
- Wear neoprene gloves, boots and a cap before buying a full wetsuit.
- Focus on breath control for the first 60 seconds — that's when cold shock hits.
