Italy's long peninsula gives it a huge spread of water temperatures. The south and islands are warm into October; the north-west is cooler even in summer.
Month-by-month
- May: Sicily and Calabria 19–21°C; Liguria and Adriatic 17–19°C.
- June–September: 23–27°C in the south and islands; 22–25°C on the Adriatic and west coast.
- October: Sicily and Sardinia 22–24°C; north cools to 18–20°C.
- November–April: south 15–17°C; north 12–15°C; swimming is for the hardy.
