The best time to swim in Hawaii

Island-by-island water temperatures and the calmest snorkelling months.

5 min read

Hawaii is warm enough to swim year-round, but the surf and wind change with the seasons. Summer is calm on the north shores and better for swimming; winter brings big surf and cooler water.

Season guide

  • Year-round: 24–27°C — comfortable without a wetsuit.
  • May–September: calm seas on north shores, best for snorkelling and families.
  • October–April: north shores see big surf; south shores are calmer and swimmable.
  • Winter water is slightly cooler; a light spring suit can help for long snorkel sessions.
