Best beaches for surfing by water temperature
Where to find warm-water surf and where you'll need a full suit.

Surfers think about water temperature differently from casual swimmers. Cold water can be fine with the right wetsuit, but warm water means longer sessions and less gear.
Warm-water surf destinations
- Indonesia: 27–30°C year-round; boardshorts and a rash vest.
- Costa Rica: 26–29°C; consistent surf and warm water.
- Hawaii: 24–27°C; a light spring suit is enough in winter.
- Portugal: 15–20°C; you'll need a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit most of the year.
- California: 13–20°C; full wetsuit, sometimes with boots and hood.
